Thief Alert

If you knew a thief was headed to your home like little Kevin in Home Alone, you too would prepare for his/her arrival or hit 911 on your speed dial.  You would stay alert and block that thief with everything you got.

Although that was just hypothetically speaking, I wanted to remind us of one major thief or violator who often heads to our homes and brings his crew to try to move in; his name is Satan.  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10 NIV)

Lately, I have noticed that what I assumed was just feeling light-headed and simply stressed had been anxiety attacks.    Not only have I had anxiety attacks, but awful dreams.  I felt like my dreams were being invaded.  I quickly went into prayer and mentally reviewed my activities, thoughts, etc. to make sure I had not given the devil access to my life or dreams.  I had not watched anything nor done anything that would make me dream such awful things.  I had been reading a Christian book about the authority of the Christian believer and the break down of how the devil/demons operate so I considered maybe that had something to do with the dreams.

However, it hit me; the devil has done it again. The devil was up to his same old tricks.  He comes to steal, kill and destroy.  As I prayed and researched scriptures on anxiety to declare deliverance, the Holy Spirit opened up my understanding of things.  I have come to realize that fear manifests itself in various ways and that this is one thing that I have yet to fully release.  I was reminded that the same God who delivered me from stomach issues and depression can deliver me from anxiety.  Someone also recently told me the acronym for F.E.A.R:  False Evidence Appearing Real.

Oh that was right on target.  The devil, from day one, has been campaigning hard to get me to believe his FEAR.  My body has been responding to the false evidence and my soul had believed the false evidence, but thank God for the Holy Spirit that resides in me.  As I draw closer to God, step into new arenas, accomplish goals this year I had set long time ago, intercede for others and conquer new territories, I understand the devil will try to come in my life and steal my patience, kill my peace, and destroy my influence.   I repeat though, I have the Holy Spirit inside of me.  I also understand that there will be battles along my journey and within each battle something to learn and something to be delivered from.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4 NIV)

Dear Daddy,

Thank You for Your unfailing love.  Thank You for keeping me and defending me when the thief creeps in.  Thank You for also warning me, even though sometimes I fail to pay attention and stay alert.  Thank You for delivering me from all those past issues and keeping me free from them.  I pray I trust You to deliver me also from these issues I left unchecked.  You are truly a covenant-keeper and a deliverer, and I stand on Your promises.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Ladies, today I EMPOWER you to stand on God’s promises and don’t believe the FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real).  Bring the fear, issue, worry, complaint, doubt, etc. before our Almighty God who will handle and defeat it all!  We are not victims, but victors.  We are the heads and not the tails.  We are conquerors and not losers.  So when the devil intimidates us with fear, remind that annoying thief who we are in Christ Jesus and what God said would be his eternal reality.  Last but not least, stay alert!  Know the devil’s tactics, close the doors you left access for him to get in, commune with God daily, saturate in His word and fix your eyes on Jesus.

What lies has the devil been trying to get you to believe?

Throwback Thursday: Battlefield of the Mind

It’s Throwback Thursday! This EmpowerMoment was originally published on April 26, 2011. Enjoy this blast from the past!

“I really need God to step in and help me in this marriage.” vs. “God isn’t concerned with your marriage; you both should just walk away.” “I made a vow before God to remain committed to my husband.” vs.“God wants you to be happy so He’ll understand if you have to cheat just this one time.” “Today, I will not get into an arguing match with him, but rather express my concerns in a calm manner.” vs. “No, you need to scream and yell because that’s the only way that you will get his respect.” Those are just pieces of a never-ending dialogue and one of the many battles that go on in my mind on a daily basis. In this particular battle, I’m trying my very best to honor the covenant that I made with God and the man He made for me and I’m meeting opposition at every angle. It almost seems as if the more I try to do the right thing, the more the wrong thing rears its ugly head. I often ask myself and God what is really going on with this situation. Then I open my Bible and read Romans 7:21 and it reminds me that I am not alone in this battle for Paul experienced this very issue. “So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.” How profound is that! Right there in my mind, evil is raging a war against the good. Some days I literally feel a tussle in my spirit and it’s the Holy Spirit dwelling in me wrestling with the evil opposition.  I am almost certain that you are facing a similar battle. If you were to be 100% honest with yourself, there is a war zone in your mind as well. There is some issue where evil is trying hard to overcome the good in your life and you are trying everything in your might to fight the battle. For many us, a lot of the battles have been lost but if you are anything like me, you hate losing—and you REALLY hate losing a battle to that enemy’s camp.  Fret not, with the 5-step battle plan outlined below, we are going to be able to take control of the battlefields in our minds and win the war!

  1. Recognize the type of battle that you are fighting and who the REAL enemy is:  For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12)  I had to realize that I had been spending more time fighting my husband as if he was the adversary. This misdirected focus had caused us to bicker while the real enemy was steady moving in closer to our camp.
  2. Understand that we do not fight like everyone elseFor though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.  (2 Corinthians 10:3) Again, our fussing and fighting is how the world goes to war. Real soldiers in the Army of the Lord are too busy fighting satan and diverting his attacks to be turning on one another.
  3. Dress for the battle: Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation…(Ephesians 6:13-17a) No wonder I was feeling EVERY shot that was fired in the battle; I wasn’t suited up properly! Truth, righteousness, peace, faith and salvation all seemed to be tucked away in my closet whenever my husband and I were having a disagreement. Really, who goes to war without the proper garments?!
  4. Know what artillery is needed: The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. (2 Corinthians 10:4) Take… the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:17b) I have often heard that no one takes a knife to a gun fight, but that’s exactly what I have been doing in the spirit! I’m busy using MY words against the enemy but the sword of the Spirit is the Word of GOD! Get in your word so that you have the ammunition when you need it!
  5. Demolish the opposition and take your thoughts captiveWe demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5) Winning a battle in our mind means that we literally have to defeat ANYTHING that is in direct opposition with God. For me this meant destroying thoughts like “God wants you to be happy so He’ll understand if you have to cheat just this one time” and making them obedient to Christ and His word.

Dear Daddy,

I really want to do the right thing but evil always finds a way to seep into my mind. Please help me to prepare for the many battles that I will encounter.  Teach me to study Your word so that I will be armed with the most important weapon for spiritual warfare. Please give me the wisdom to know how and when to fight, the courage to go to war in the spirit and the strength to endure the battle. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Ladies, today I EMPOWER you to refuse to let the enemy win the battle in your mind. EMPOWER your fight by ensuring that you are prepared for the battle.

Are you winning the battle in your mind or do you allow your emotions to control the battle? Share your story with us.

Kicked Even When You’re Down

When I saw my ex-boyfriend’s number pop up on the caller ID, I was prepared to tell him that I would call him back after I completed my homework. However, I was not given that opportunity. After saying hello, I realized that it was his sister calling to tell me that he had passed away a couple of hours ago. At that very moment everything around me seemed surreal including the phone call. I just knew that it was a cruel joke and in a second someone would jump out and scream “GOTCHA!” Instead, my heart instantly grew heavy because I was uncertain as to how to handle a loss of this magnitude.

I told the story last year of dealing with the losses of both my grandmothers five months apart, but for some reason dealing with the death of someone that I grew to love was totally different. The pain seemed to be a thousand times stronger and I couldn’t put my finger on exactly why. Was it because at points in our relationship I loved him more than God and myself? Or maybe because I told him on many occasions I would pray for him and didn’t? Perhaps, I felt guilty that I didn’t discuss God enough with him? Or better yet, I was uncertain of where he would spend eternity…

All of these questions, concerns, and emotions came to surface over the next couple of days after hearing of his death. I would go from being so happy to feeling so defeated in my Christianity because I lost someone I loved and was so confused about what lied ahead of him. The devil began attacking my thoughts every chance possible by forcing me to question who I was in the body of Christ to allow something like this to transpire. I mean how can I, an intricate part of the intake of new members at my church, fail to offer salvation to someone that I have known for years. From that Sunday until that following Saturday at the service, I went back and forth with the enemy giving in to those outlandish thoughts on many occasions because it was hard to immediately cast those thoughts down. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2Corinthians 10:5 NIV)

It was at the home-going, that I received confirmation from my ex-boyfriend’s aunt that I would indeed see him again in eternity. During her words of encouragement, she stated that she prayed with him before he passed and he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. I was extremely overjoyed and found myself screaming “HALLELUJAH” and weeping hysterically. The very thing that the enemy was using to place me in a state of mild depression over the past few days was canceled immediately as she declared those words in the atmosphere. Not only did I feel better knowing that he was present with the Lord, but I was instantly released from the bondage that the enemy was attempting to attach to me. My praise session ended up having a dual meaning that gave God all the glory that He was due! For the Lord will not cast off forever, but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love. (Lamentations 3:31-32 ESV)

Dear Daddy,

Thank You for showing up right when I am at my breaking point. Things that take place in the natural can cause me to give into the enemy’s ploy, but that is when You show me that You are always in control. Help me to stay aware of the attempts from the devil when I am in my most vulnerable state. Keep my ears, eyes, and heart alert at all times, but most important, keep me guarded with Your Word, love, and grace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Women of God, I EMPOWER you to be aware of the devil’s efforts to take us out every chance that he gets or better yet every chance we give. “The thief (devil) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I (Jesus) come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10 NIV) Times of trouble, distress, mourning, etc. are the game winning moments for the enemy, but it is up to us to declare a victory for Team JESUS! Have a BLESSED week! ☺

Share with us your God-led victories over the devil’s tricks, traps and plans to derail you in any way.

This is Bigger Than Me!

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6: 12 NKJV)

Last week was mentally draining. I am always busy and on the go but something was different about that week. I woke up every morning feeling like I had been wrestling in my sleep all night. Some may say, “Girl you just need a break,” which is true, but something was different about this wrestle. Luke 10: 19 says Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you (KJV). Even in my sleep the Holy Spirit and the anointing of God were still working on my behalf.

I went to bed fine one night and I woke up the next morning feeling horrible. It takes a lot for me to decide to go to the hospital but I chose to because I literally felt like my room was spinning. I thought maybe because of my weight I had developed diabetes (you know how we diagnose ourselves). However, the doctors ran a lot of tests and they couldn’t find anything. Of course I had enough common sense to go to doctor but I also realized that the devil was attacking my body because he wasn’t winning any other way. Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee (James 4: 7 NIV). The devil will try to intervene and make matters worse but if you identify what the sneaky devil is up to he is forced to get off of you.

Later in the week, I started receiving phone calls from people and everything was negative energy. People were angry with me for no apparent reason. All my gossiping buddies were resurfacing. My daughter was acting more defiant than usual and my husband was acting strange too. Even people at work, who I’m usually very girl friendly with, were acting extremely formal with me and there was just an unusual aura in the building. I have learned that the devil will use anything and anyone to distract you. And often, people don’t even realize the devil is using them. God had given me discernment and I identified the devil again and he fled. I thought, “What a rough week,” but the devil wasn’t done with me yet…

The icing was placed on the cake Sunday when I had to preach. Whenever you have to do something for God the devil is angry, but I usually pray and defeat him. However, when it was time for me to speak Sunday there was the worst spirit lingering in the church. I had never felt that in my life. I started praying silently while everyone was singing. When I started speaking the Word, the Spirit was on me and I started speaking so loud and fast that I forgot I was speaking to congregation as I was trying to make the spirit flee. No, I’m not crazy; the devil is indeed real! Someone brought a spirit into the church and instead of me stopping, praying and laying hands, I assumed it would just leave. After I preached, I sat down and started praying. I started to cry out to the Lord and command all of the lingering negative spirits to move in the name of Jesus! Those bad spirits, coupled with everything else I had encountered throughout the week prompted me to put on the whole armor of God. After all that had transpired, I knew that it was bigger than me.

Through that crazy and deranged week I was reminded that no weapon formed against me shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17 KJV). I am walking into my divine purpose and if I wasn’t on track to my destiny, the devil wouldn’t be on my track. I had to go into prayer for God to really speak to me. He told me how the devil wants me to snap but He has the final say. So I am encouraged despite what he throws at me and how it makes me feel. I’ve chosen not to take his attacks personally; He’s just angry that he lost me! I cannot entertain the devil because greater is He that’s in me, than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4 KJV). I have realized that this is bigger than me!

Dear Daddy,

Thank You for covering me in the blood of the Lamb! I thank You for protecting me against the evil spirits and principalities of this sin sick world. I am asking You, dear God, to continue giving me discernment so that I can recognize the devil and make him flee. I pray that You continue giving me peace in the midst of all of my circumstances. I pray that You give others around me the spirit of discernment so that they can also identify the devil and tell him to flee. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Ladies, I EMPOWER you to identify the devil and make him flee. I EMPOWER you to stay equipped for battle through prayer and reading your Bible because the devil comes to steal, kill and destroy. Realize when issues and adversities are coming quicker than you can catch them, THIS IS BIGGER THAN YOU! Remember that as saved women you have more power than the devil!

On Ready

“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13 NIV

I was totally caught off guard today. I went to a meeting and arrived late. When I arrived, the mood of the other people in the meeting was that of “I know she didn’t just walk into this meeting late.” I perceived the mood because I was walking in the flesh of agitation, so I probably just made it up. As the meeting progressed I kept noticing one participant repetitively negating my comments to the moderator of the meeting behind my back. Boy was I steamed. I was so agitated that I took a moment- dead sentence -to face this individual, pause, and regroup. (It got ugly for a minute.) At the end of the meeting I was approached by another participant that began to accuse me of presenting something to the team that was inappropriate, of which he presented to the team the other day. At that point, I became extremely irritated and decided to go to my car without choosing to mingle afterwards.

Later that evening, while reflecting over my day and spending time with the Lord he spoke to me through the spirit saying, “You didn’t suit up today, you weren’t ready to handle the darts.” And He was right! I was so agitated by the events of the evening that I didn’t even realize what I was dealing with.

I forgot that it was not the people per se that were causing my agitation, but the devil was trying to deter me from my focus. I was not walking in the spirit of God. If I were, I would have known that those individuals were being used as a distraction for me to react in a way that would not mimic that of Christ. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12 KJV)

The lesson learned was this: The people in the meeting were not out to get me. I had my guard down. I was not prepared to withstand the tricks of the devil. I allowed my perceptions, that were tainted by the enemy, to control my actions. I’m reminded; that we wrestle NOT against flesh and blood. So it’s pointless for us to get upset with people that agitate us. It’s only the devil trying to throw a wrench in your plans and in your happiness.

Dear Daddy,

I am convinced that nothing can separate me from Your love. Lord, guide my actions and my words. It is so easy to act out of flesh, but if I want to be the Woman of Virtue that You have called me to be, I have to walk in the spirit. So Lord help me to suit up daily so that I can be prepared for the attacks of the enemy. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Ladies, I EMPOWER you to start each day and recharge throughout your day with the armor of Christ (Ephesians 6: 14-18 NIV). Start each day with prayer and worship so that your mind is focused and positioned on God and his direction for your life. Stay on ready! When irritants and agitators come your way, immediately recognize that these are mere distractions deterring you from completing what God has for your life. Stay ready!

Battlefield of the Mind

“I really need God to step in and help me in this marriage.” vs. “God isn’t concerned with your marriage; you both should just walk away.” “I made a vow before God to remain committed to my husband.” vs. “God wants you to be happy so He’ll understand if you have to cheat just this one time.” “Today, I will not get into an arguing match with him, but rather express my concerns in a calm manner.” vs. “No, you need to scream and yell because that’s the only way that you will get his respect.” Those are just pieces of a never-ending dialogue and one of the many battles that go on in my mind on a daily basis.

Control Freaks Anonymous

Ok, I’m about to make a confession and trust me this is HUGE for me! Hello, my name is Kristen and I’m a bit of a control freak. Now those of you who are reading this who really know me are saying two things to the screen: (1) That isn’t a revelation; I could’ve told you that a long time ago! (2) I would probably remove the ‘bit’ from that statement! I totally accept those words because I know that I’m almost compulsive when it comes to controlling situations. For much of my adult life, I have lived by the motto “If I want it done RIGHT, I should just do it myself.” This attitude is dangerous as it causes me not to entrust people with simple tasks that they are more than qualified to carry out. In fact, many times the very people that I don’t trust are much more credentialed than me. The saddest part of this whole situation is that I find myself treating the One who is most knowledgeable about everything the same way.

So here we are a month after the launch of the EmpowerMoments site and I feel that this is going to far exceed what I could have ever imagined because God is ready for his daughters to walk in liberty and on purpose.  I know that He has given me this assignment as a part of that objective. So of course the control freak in me wanted to ensure that that objective was being met! (How ridiculous of me!) I found myself checking the site stats every few minutes trying to find out how many people were viewing the post, calling my friends making sure that they read it, and all types of other crazy stuff (I told you I was borderline obsessive & compulsive). Last Wednesday, God literally hit the pause button and made me stop. He reminded me that this was an assignment that He had given me and it’s not up to me to evaluate the performance because I’m not the teacher. How many times as a student had I graded my own paper? He went on further to explain that we are releasing HIS word into cyberspace. So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11) Plain as day, in black and white, He was saying to me that I don’t need your help in accomplishing what I desire. Sit down somewhere! Here I was trying to oversee the accomplishments of the EmpowerMoments and that wasn’t what I had been tasked with.  I’m just here as a servant and messenger and once I do what He told me to do; the rest is up to Him. My actions were saying that I didn’t trust Him to do what He said that He would.

In just one week’s time the hits on the site nearly tripled and it wasn’t because I was logging in checking every 5 minutes (really it was literally every 5 minutes!) It was because He was on His job…I just needed to be on mine. Just a couple verses before the one mentioned earlier, God said: “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9) Little ole’ me was down here on earth trying to do something that required a resume` with heaven as the header address. His experience at this stuff (and ALL stuff for that matter) far exceeds anything that I am bringing to the table so I decided to let it go!

Now since we are in Control Freaks Anonymous, I implore you to take this moment just as I did and verbally confess your control issues (or other issues) to someone else. James 5:16 says, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” Ask them to keep you lifted in prayer that you may overcome this thing.

Dear Daddy,

Please forgive me for the times that I didn’t trust You to do Your job. Teach me to focus on the assignment that You have given me and not worry about how You are orchestrating things behind the scenes. Please also remind me that I cannot do everything myself and teach me how to entrust people to help me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Today EMPOWER yourself and your assignment by choosing to stay in YOUR lane. Focusing on your task will ensure that it’s done with a spirit of excellence. Also, EMPOWER someone else to assist you along the way because you cannot do it all by yourself!
