The Climb

Coming off Black Music Month I’m sure you all have been blessed with all the music we selected that was produced, sang, written, or performed by people in our community. As I close out my quarter with EmpowerMoments, I want to leave you with one of my “I need to listen to this because I need to remember” songs. Now this is not by a Black artist nor does it have Black writers (I figured I could cheat since it is technically July). It is performed by Miley Cyrus and it’s entitled simply, The Climb.

I can almost see it

That dream I’m dreaming

But there’s a voice inside my head saying

“You’ll never reach it”

Every step I’m taking

Every move I make feels

Lost with no direction

My faith is shaking

But I gotta keep trying

Gotta keep my head held high

“He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20 NIV)

There’s always going to be another mountain

I’m always gonna want to make it move

Always gonna be an uphill battle

Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose

Ain’t about how fast I get there

Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side, it’s the climb

Have you ever sat back and asked God WHY? The car didn’t start today, someone cut me off, got in an accident, the promotion didn’t come through, lost the house, lost the job, lost the relationship, lost a loved one, LOSING MY MIND!!! Fret not (in my Madea’s voice). Each thing that you go through is simply a part of this journey that you are taking. These things come along because well, SUCH IS LIFE! It’s not supposed to be easy. If we never went through anything we would not have the where with all to know that God can bring us through anything. For He alone is our companion on this journey, a guide in fact who serves as the One who directs us. Is the path going to be easy? No, but it is through our climb that we learn who to give the glory to.

The struggles I’m facing

The chances I’m taking

Sometimes might know me down

But no, I’m not breaking

I may not know it

But these are the moments

I’m gonna remember most, yeah

Just gotta keep going

Dear Daddy,

Thank You for this climb. I understand that it is not an easy one and I thank You even for the storms. Through them You only draw me closer to You. Continue to be with me on this journey, In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Today I EMPOWER you to KEEP CLIMBING. The journey that you are taking will make you stronger. Do not give up on what it is that you are trying to reach. Keep faith in God and trust that He will get you there.

  1. Shawna I am going to miss your poetic writing. It always gives me pause for cause and makes me question some of my habits. You are sooo right if it weren’t for the journey we would not know God’s amazing strength and his love. We are who we are because He is who He is….

  2. Thanks for empowering us to keep climbing! Sometimes the moutain side is rough..but as the old song goes Lord, if youre not going to move this moutain, then give me strength to climb….or something like that! 🙂

I concur with Chancee`. Your prose and artistic way of writing has blessed me (and lots of others) beyond measure! Love ya!
