The Night We Almost Died…

“…Obedience is better than sacrifice…” (1 Samuel 15:22 NLT)

It was a balmy night in August of 2010. We were on the second leg of our European Excursion. We had waited so long to experience one of the infamous “foam parties” in Ibiza, Spain. So imagine how excited we were to find out that one was taking place at Club Amnesia on the first night of our visit. That was a double treat because way back in the day Jay-Z had piqued our interest in Club Amnesia when he mentioned it in one of his songs. Surely, this was going to be one of the best nights of our lives—WRONG, that would be the night that we almost died…

On our way into club, the majority of our group decided that 60 Euros was too steep of a price to pay to get in. Oh, but not the “Final Four.” We had traveled too far and already spent a nice amount of money to get there not to indulge in the foam party. So the group left us and we paid for our ticket into party paradise. Little did we know, we were buying a ticket into hell on earth and that would be the night that we almost died…

Once inside the massive warehouse type structure, we were amazed at the number of people inside. There had to be at least 5,000 partygoers. In the midst of this sea of people, it seemed that the “Final Four” just didn’t belong. I instantly heard a still, small voice whisper, “You should leave now.” My thoughts were, “Surely, I’m not about to leave now, especially after I just paid about $80 in US currency to get in! Let’s get this party started!” I suppressed that inner voice because it was speaking against what I felt I should do. What I didn’t understand was that that voice was trying to save my life because that would be the night that I almost died…

As we waited patiently for the foam party to commence, we witnessed things that I cannot even begin to explain here. Things that would be illegal to do in public here; things that you would be ashamed to tell your mother you saw; things that would make you cover your eyes but then peek just to be sure it was really happening; most important, things that would vex your spirit man. Yes, I know you are sitting on the edge of your seat wondering what could have really been that bad. Well, on stage entertainment included men having live and real relations with one another. Yes, it was just that bad. As we stood there and realized that we were planted right in the middle of a present day Sodom & Gomorrah, each of us heard that still, small voice say, “It’s time for you to leave.” Individually, God was speaking to each of us but we weren’t aware of that.  So we all ignored that command because we didn’t want to spoil the fun for the other three.  What we didn’t realize is that we wouldn’t have been spoiling the fun for each other, we would have been saving each others’ lives because that would be the night we almost died…

As the night passed, I grew increasingly uncomfortable with the environment yet annoyed with this voice that kept trying to ruin my experience. I was convinced that if we could just hold out until 2am for the foam party, all of my feelings of uneasiness would subside. I ventured off and found out that we were in the wrong room for the foam party. As I walked back to retrieve the group and let them know that it was just about time for the foam to be released, that voice rose again. Only that time it wasn’t still and small at all. It was more like a loud, thunderous voice that said, “LEAVE NOW!”We can’t leave now. It’s finally time for the foam party and we have been waiting for this!” I proceeded to grab the girls so that we could have the time of our life. I should’ve been grabbing them and heading for the nearest exit as we were about to literally experience a taste of death on the night we almost died…

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. (John 10:27 NIV)

We ran excitedly to the foam party room and tried to press our way to the front. However, there were so many other people in there that we couldn’t get as close as we desired. Settling for our post in the middle of the room, we braced ourselves for the release of the foam! I thought, “Yes! Finally, the moment we’ve been waiting for!” And the countdown began: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5-4-3-2-1…

What happened after 1 is still kind of sketchy. What I can tell you is that the foam was released and my breath was instantly taken away. It literally felt like a hand was choking the life out of my body. I couldn’t open my eyes; it felt as if someone has glued my eye lids shut.  I saw my life flash before my eyes. I couldn’t speak so my spirit cried out to God. “PLEASE don’t let me die in this place! I have a husband and two girls that I have to return home to. Save me Jesus!” It was at that moment that the grip was released from my neck and I was able to catch my breath and open my eyes. I searched frantically for my friends and saw that they were in distress too. Ironically enough, we were the ONLY ones under this attack; everyone else was still dancing and enjoying the party. Why? Because that was the night that Satan desired to kill us…

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.  But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:31-32 NIV)

This small passage of scripture embodies our entire lesson for today. Satan had already asked God for permission to attack each of us that night.  However, Jesus was interceding on our behalf. He was praying that our faith in Him would allow us to obey that voice inside of us urging us to leave. Our faith is about more than just believing in God. It is about hearing and heeding His commands and knowing that if He is telling us to do something, it HAS to be for our good.

In the latter part of verse 32, Jesus tells Peter (Simon) to strengthen his brothers after he has turned back. Here is where we failed terribly. When we heard the Holy Spirit speaking, we should have turned our back on our desires and strengthened each other to do the same.

Dear Daddy,

Please forgive me for all of the times when I blatantly disobeyed You. Lord, I know that You have my best interest in mind. Teach me to know Your voice for Your Word says Your sheep listen to You. Thank You for covering me when I know You told me to go and I stayed or when You told me no and I chose yes or when You said be quiet and I still spoke.  Lord, give me the will to obey You and Your Word at all times. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

I didn’t share that long story with you to entertain you. However, I shared it with you to EMPOWER you to obey God ALWAYS! Obey when it makes sense and even when it doesn’t. Your life depends on your obedience!

  1. Krissy I just read this and have TEARS in my eyes. As I was reading the story, it was as if I was reliving the moment. Jesus I’m sorry that we were so concerned about ruining an experience for each other that we FAILED to obey you.

    I remember losing my breath, trying to signal to all of these foreigners that i couldn’t breath but no one understood English and it was so packed we could barely move. I remember God giving me strength that I know I didn’t possess because I was able to forcibly move people out of my way so that I could get to an exit. I lost my purse but couldn’t be concerned because I was more concerned that I was about to lose my life. I prayed and asked God not to let me die in a CLUB!!! God gave us signs all along the way. Our driver when we first got to Spain told us that he lost his breath at the foam party and told us about the same experience we would later have. The cab driver to the club told us not to go in because it was not the right night. We didn’t listen and we almost paid a price that we couldn’t afford. Krissy thanks for sharing even though it is still a very hard story for me to talk about. I still have not been able to laugh about it yet.

    1. I am just so happy that we are both still here to even talk about this moment. Every time I want to consider not listening, He always brings this story to my memory. It can be the smallest command such as telling me to sow a seed into someone’s life. I HAVE to do it even when I dont want to. Not only does MY life depend on my obedience, but so many other peoples destinies are contingent upon my obedience….

    Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God is all I could say while reading yor post!! Thank you Jesus; for interceding on your behalf as well as the other ladies!!!! JESUS!!!!! Kristen, I feel like having “church” right here in my office right now!! Talk about “coincidental”…right before I read your post I was listening to “The blood will never lose it’s power” on my computer; and then you share this story with us! How powerful THE BLOOD IS!!!!! Praying that the Holy Ghost continue to speak in your ear when the situation is not right and the enemy thinks it’s a way in to attack you!! THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this story with us.   3. Wow! When I hear a story about God delivering people from imminent death it always amazes me. Out of all the people going through their situations, God saw fit to save YOU during that one sliver in time. Can you say MERCY!?! I had an instance where I thought I was going to die and I yelled “JESUS SAVE ME!!!” And he did. How special we must be to him. Great post. Thanks for sharing.

The times when you dont feel like it, the times when its hardest and the times when it hurts the most, if you are obedient–He is going to bless you for your sacrifice. Stand still and watch the salvation of the Lord….

  4. I woke around 9:30 this morning and rolled over to my cell phone and begin checking my emails. I saw my empowermoments was ready for the day. I knew after reading the subject and the first scripture where we were headed! All I could say was My God. Yet, I read it as i was never part of the situation. I begin to sit up further and further in my bed as the story went on! By time it was over I had to get up and praise God all over again with tears in my eyes!

    This is one night I will never forget. As I read the story I was convicted all over again. I felt ashamed for all the things we witness. I felt like I had let my father down by being disobedient and my sisters bc I never spoke any of this to them till afterwards (we all did). However, what the devil meant for bad God meant for good! He protected us even when we didn’t deserve it! I am so thankful for his grace and mercy!!

    I constantly remind myself of this event when I want to do what Kristi wants to do, when I hear BUT don’t hear, or when I don’t want to be the lame of the group! God wants us to be acknowledge him in everything!

    Krissy, thanks for sharing! The way you wrote it had me on pins and needles all over again! Chancee, Tosha, and Krissy I love each of you dearly and I’m thankful for each of you! I hate what we experienced BUT I’m glad it was with three God fearing women! Bc we all knew immediately who to call on and send praises up to afterwards!

      I remember how quiet you were and that made me feel horrible as if I had let my little sister down. How could I not respond to the voice of the most HOLY one? Thank you God for mercy, grace and FAVOR! I am so happy that God saw fit to keep us in our foolishness. It just lets me know that He has a purpose for us that we may not even realize. He has kept us around to useful to Him. Be sure to seize the opportunity to live again…Love u!

  5. This article was truly an empowering moment. I have heard this story before but not from this view point. The message that comes from this story can be applied to so many areas in our lives. In this story it was a voice from God telling you all to leave a situation that was not for you and not where he wanted you to be. For others it could be so many other “places”; physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. God speaks to us all the time. It is that voice from within that tells you that something is wrong or is just not quite right. Some people call it intuition but the truth of the matter is that it is God. After reading this, it confirms the fact that we are all truly blessed to still be here on this Earth and have the ability to celebrate God and his glory. I know personally I have been in situations, both voluntarily and involuntarily, that have put my life in danger and several times I heard that voice telling be to leave and I ignored. We should all be thankful that there is someone watching over us and taking care of us when we are not smart enough to do it ourselves. I know I am. Thanks for sharing this story. It was truly empowering.

      You are absolutely right re: that intuition comment. Once we accepted Jesus, the Holy Spirit starting dwelling on the inside. So He talks to us from the inside just like He speaks from the outside…Isnt His divine protection just amazing? He keeps us even when we act like we dont want to be kept.

    That was such a great post! You captured the moment through your writing so well.

    I distinctively remember during the first 10 minutes on the dance floor that I felt some heavily charged sexual and/or perverted energy that just didn’t feel right. I actually felt like evil spirits were roaming around in human foam. At that moment I knew that I wasn’t suppose to be there. The voice was so persistent that I immediately left the dance floor and went to the bathroom to get out of that space and as protection for my foot.

    I sat on a 6 inch wall ledge for about 3-4 hours. I didn’t want to spoil the experience for everyone else so I just decided to patiently wait and watch. Ironically, not once was I moved to peek out the bathroom, see what was going on the stage and/or participate any further in the party.

    I remember sitting in the bathroom singing, people watching, thinking and praying but I always felt that we were all protected. I knew this type of club wasn’t my cup of tea…. but actually I had attributed that to my age (39). I thought to myself “WOW! I guess I am just old because this ain’t fun to me.”

    I thank God for our safety and lessons learned by us individually and collectively. Now as I reflect on the experience I realize that we have a duty as Christians to make sure that we are being true to the messages that God gives us. I feel that in many ways I should have shared and/or been more vocal about what I was feeling.

    Thank God for favor. Now we’ve GOT this lesson.

    1. Thanks Tosha! As I reflect on that night, there was so many other things that I just didnt have room to explain. But its so amazing how even though we didnt go when He said go, He STILL orchastrated things so that the enemy wouldnt be able to destroy us. These are just a few of my observations: (1) Most of the group leaving–everyone could not have handled was what about to happen in that place. (2) Your foot being messed up causing you to sit in the bathroom — how catastrophic it would have been to have you caught up in that mess. And to know that you were praying the whole time makes a WORLD of difference. (3) We couldnt get to the front like we wanted to — He will only allow you to go so far. Y’all really dont understand—I could stop right here and have a praise break! DIVINE INTERVENTION! My God is AWESOME!

      This whole scenario reminds me of the story of Job…satan asked for permission and God gave him permission to attack Job but he couldnt lay a finger on the man himself….

  8. WOW! I know for myself how awesome God is. There have been many times I have been in places that I had no business being and it was only God’s grace and mercy that brought me out. Thank you Jesus for the BLOOD. ..

  9. WOW! I was on the edge of my seat reading this post and honey when I made it to the end I had goosebumps. Girl all I could say was thank you God for protecting us even when we want to do what we want to do. Krissy I have been in so many places that God have protected me because I didn’t have any business there. I am started to listen to that voice (the Holy Spirit) when It speaks to me and tell me to go right instead of left. God is so amazing and I thank God that you ladies are okay and that God dwells on the inside of you all! Thanks for this post it really was an amazing testimony and story to help someone that can not recognize the voice that is one the inside them!

I am glad that God delivered you ALL from that ugly situation- Lord knows it has been many times I should have LEFT and I decided to stay! God is so great that He still protects his children even when He tells us the way to go! Thank you Lord for your grace and mercy and thanks to you sis for sharing!

  11. It never ceases to amaze me how we forget that satan is really on the prowl to kill and destroy us. I think I would have been right there with you ignoring the voice, because I have failed that same test before in my own life. I am beyond overjoyed that you are ALL here to write and praise about it. But there is a deeper lesson here, we can’t take God’s protection, nor satan’s misses for granted (Which is what was so eloquently shared in your post). He is really out to kill us. However, I am comforted to know that God not only spoke to you during the midst, but he SAVED you! He is an AWESOME God!!!
