Get Ya Weight Up!

“I can’t believe this! I’m hungry AGAIN!”  Yesterday, I ate breakfast and made two sandwiches to eat for lunch.  I ate those sandwiches by 9:30 a.m.  I went to grab lunch at noon and was hungry again by 2:30 p.m.  My appetite is out of control!

I recently set a goal to gain 15 pounds by Spring 2012 per my doctor, who is concerned about me being underweight.  At first I was uneasy about sharing this because I was concerned that people would think I was starving myself which couldn’t be further from the truth.  I’ve never had trouble eating; my problem was that I just didn’t eat enough and my metabolism is off the charts so anything I did eat was just burned up, which left me underweight.

This morning I thanked God for answering my prayers and increasing my appetite.  In my time of meditation, the Lord spoke and simply said, “What has happened to your appetite?”  I responded, “Huh?”  I didn’t understand what was going on.  What did God mean?  My appetite was better than ever.  After much reflection I realized God wasn’t talking about my appetite for food, He was speaking of my appetite for the things of God!

Though I didn’t want to, I had to admit that my spiritual appetite has decreased lately.  I was not outright sinning against God but I wasn’t running after God with the same zeal.  For example, while I have still been praying and reading the word of God, my prayers have been very surface and short and my bible reading only consists of reading my daily devotional before going to bed and when writing my weekly EmpowerMoment. While I still go to church, I have been less hesitant about missing a service and watching it online if I don’t “feel like” going.  There was a time when my prayers would attract attention from the neighbors and I could go hours reading and reflecting on the word of God.  There was a time when I could say to God, zeal for your house consumes me…” (Psalm 69:9a NIV)  What happened to my appetite?

I know–THINGS GOT BETTER!!  I have fallen into the trap where many Christians find themselves.  Only chasing after God with everything they have when things are bad.  The more I thought about this, the more God revealed how my spiritual walk paralleled my physical issue.  Yes, I was spiritually eating but I wasn’t eating ENOUGH!  There are so many things coming at me that the spiritual nourishment I was getting was quickly being burned off by the warfare I am dealing with. Therefore, I am spiritually underweight.  I can’t do what I need to do if I’m not at the spiritual “weight” required for my “height” in God (my destiny). Just as being physically underweight leaves one open to sickness and other ailments, being spiritually underweight leaves me open to not only attack from the devil but also it becomes easier for my flesh to overtake my spirit, One who is full loathes honey from the comb, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.” (Proverbs 27:7 ESV)

I am now not only on a journey to gain physical weight, but also to get weight in the spirit realm.  So the next time God asks me “What happened to your appetite?” I will be able to say without hesitation, “My appetite is out of control!!” I want to live a Deuteronomy 6:5 life: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (NIV)

Dear Daddy,

Please forgive me for allowing my appetite for You to wane.  I love You more than anything God, and I apologize for times that I’ve gotten too comfortable with You and took Your love, grace, mercy, salvation, and deliverance for granted.  Lord, please increase my appetite for Your glory.  Lord, I will not be the kind of child that needs disaster and problems to arise in order for me to seek Your face and give You the glory You deserve.  Lord, I thank You for giving me another chance to be who You destined me to be.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Ladies, today I EMPOWER you to check your spiritual weight!

  • Are you at the spiritual weight that God would have you to be?
  • Is your spiritual diet sufficient for what God is trying to do in you and through you?

If your answer was no, pray and ask God to increase your appetite and start with these steps:

  •  Set specific goals to increase your time with the Lord
  • Eat more spiritual food – Increase your personal study of God’s word
  • Work out – Seek out opportunities to exercise and use the word of God that you study
