To commemorate our nation’s independence this week, we are featuring a series entitled “I Am Free”. Read this week as our writers share how God has delivered them and set them free!
I am FREE from entertaining distractions!
Did you know that there were three components to the ear: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear? Did you know that the ear not only enables you to hear, but it also keeps you physically balanced? Well, I learned all of this the hard way and have come to really appreciate my ears. We not only need to hear but balance ourselves. Let me say that again in case you missed it–We not only need to hear, but balance ourselves.
I recently came about this knowledge after experiencing for about five weeks some of the most uncomfortable symptoms I had ever experienced. I felt lightheaded, fatigued, off-balance, and congested. I often thought the room was spinning or my head was under water. My ears felt clogged and I even felt anxious. I kept pushing off going to the doctor. I didn’t know what was causing the symptoms. Several people said it was from blood pressure, other people’s negative energy, a lack of rest, or sinus problems, etc. I even thought it was largely due to me hurting my eardrum after trying to soothe my itching ear with a Q-Tip. I realized, however, that these symptoms occurred before the Q-Tip incident. I was stumped and had to suck it up because I soon had to fly for a family trip, but I needed relief badly. I was miserable!
After talking to my sister-in-Christ who is in the medical field and doing some research, I found the cause was something going on with my ears, specifically my inner ear. I also found that the symptoms were merely a representation of my spiritual symptoms. My sister-in-Christ, my pastor and friend all confirmed what God was saying to me. He was saying:
“Your ears are clogged because you are distracted. You are off-balance spiritually. Listen and put your focus back on me.”
“You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not listen.” (Isaiah 42:20 NIV)
Truly I could not deny this. I was not listening. My heart was clogged with distractions, worries and ungodly thoughts. I was also overwhelmed with trying to plan my family trip, bills, job tasks and deadlines (even though I was on vacation) and pleasing others. I was putting others and things before God. I was letting things like Facebook and plans for this and that consume my time. I was distracted and weighed down. No wonder I was sick!
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith… (Hebrews 12:1-2 NLT)
God was trying to get my attention, warn me, love me, help me and give me peace. I am glad to say I feel much better now. I am healed and am no longer entertaining distractions! DISTRACTIONS are ways for the devil to come in and stop you from effectively walking with Christ and impacting the world around you. DISTRACTIONS keep you off-balance. DISTRACTIONS say everything else is more important than God. DISTRACTIONS say I can drown out the most important voice I need to hear. Do not drown out God’s Voice! Turn off that phone or that TV, tell that person ‘no’, resist that thought, and pray now even if you can think of a thousand things that you need to do. Put GOD first!
Thank You for helping me to realize that I was being hard of hearing, disobedient, and entertaining distractions. Thank You for reminding me that You come first. Continue to unclog my ears and help me to focus on You. Help me to give You my undivided attention and never again drown out Your voice. Your voice is the most important thing that I need to hear and help me to respond to You every time You speak. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
Ladies, today I EMPOWER you to prioritize making sure God is first. Don’t let distractions keep you from hearing what God is saying to you. Spend quality time with the Lord and saturate in His Word. Unclog your ears and be willing to listen!
