Throwback Thursday: Rejected By Men…

…but chosen by God!

It’s Throwback Thursday! This EmpowerMoment was originally published on October 28, 2011. Enjoy this blast from the past!

Sitting here at this high school football game, I can’t believe this!  Yesterday, I went to get my hair done for this.  Today I was right by the stadium yet I drove all the way home to change clothes because I refused to wear a track suit to this HIGH SCHOOL football game!  I timed my arrival so I would get there in the middle of the game so that I would be seen by all as I made my way to my seat.  Now I’m sitting here watching my alma mater painfully lose this game wondering, “What has gotten into me?”

The alumni were invited to this football game because it was the 10 year anniversary of when all three levels of our football team won city championships and those players were to be honored during halftime.  When I found out about it at first I was NOT going to go!   Quiet as it’s kept, I don’t like football, I know nothing about the game and I don’t like sitting outside when it’s cold, period!!  However, I heard the weather was going to be nice and I was excited about seeing some of the people I went to high school with, so I decided to go.

From the moment I made that decision, this simple event took on a life of its own.  Before I knew it, I was planning an outfit, making a hair appointment, and thinking about when would be the perfect time to arrive.  As I sat and thought about my actions, I realized why I had behaved this way.  In high school I was always struggling to fit in and I just didn’t!  I was the church girl, the virgin, the tall girl, and the skinny girl with the big chest.  I didn’t have the most updated clothing and my style was certainly eccentric for early 2000’s teenage fashion.  I always desired to be accepted, especially by the boys, but I was certainly not the girl that got asked on dates every weekend.  In high school and even into college, I carried this fear of rejection and many times made some unwise choices in order to not be rejected or so I thought!  This fear of rejection affected my self-esteem which, contrary to what everyone would believe, has been really low at several points in my life.

After an abusive relationship, several broken hearts, and a one night stand, I finally accepted, “He [God] has made everything beautiful in its time.  He has also set eternity in the hearts of men.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11a NIV) With this realization I was able to declare, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” (Psalms 139:14a NIV)  I had this rejection thing licked…or so I thought!  It’s so interesting how we believe we are totally delivered from something until we’re confronted again with that very thing.  I blossomed into adulthood and was soon turning down more dates than I was accepting.  I went from not ever being asked out to being asked out all the time; however, whenever I came into contact with someone I was interested in who didn’t want to pursue me or someone who had previously rejected me, I found out quickly that I was still struggling with rejection.

So in this state I sat at this high school football game, relishing in the fact that those who rejected me now wanted me.  In my mind, I was singing a chorus of “Look at Me Now!” I even spiritualized it quoting scripture, “…rejected by men, but chosen by God and precious to him” (1 Peter 2:4 NIV)However while doing all of this, I totally neglected v.5 “…you also, like living stones are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ…” WHOA!! My actions were certainly not spiritually acceptable.  I was operating in a spirit of pride, arrogance and underneath it all, I still had a fear of being rejected.  But God will help those who diligently seek Him so I sought the Lord’s help and all He kept pushing me to focus on was the latter part of 1 Peter 2:4 “CHOSEN BY GOD and precious to him”

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, chosen means:  selected from several; preferred; elect. As a child of God, I am preferred, selected from several other options. Because God loves me so much He said, “…I have chosen you out of the world…” (John 16:19b NIV) However, God did not just choose me for any reason; He says, “…I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last…” (John 15:16 NIV) God chose me to fulfill a purpose and destiny that will build the kingdom of God and bring Him glory.  ANYTHING that does not fall in line with that purpose and destiny is just not worth the time and energy it takes to deal with it.   Because God knows me and because I am precious to Him, He knows who to bring into my life and who to remove and who I need to reject and who He needs to cause to reject me!  I truly desire to be EVERYTHING God called me to be so I choose to surrender, “…not as I will, but your will be done…” (Matthew 26:39) NIV

This revelation gave me a renewed sense of purpose and I hope this will help someone who has struggled with rejection like I have.  Yes! We have struggled with rejection from men but we have been chosen by God. Whose acceptance is more important?

Dear Daddy,

Thank You for choosing us!  Thank You for seeing more in us and pushing us toward greatness even when we don’t see greatness in ourselves.  We ask that You continue to come after us.  Please do not allow us to get distracted from the assignments You have given us by fleshly desires to be accepted by men.  Lord, we surrender to You and say, not our will but Your will be done! Whoever You need to cause to reject us so that we can grow and fulfill our destiny in You, so be it!  We thank You in advance for the amazing destiny that You have for us; we know it is nothing we could have ever thought to dream for ourselves.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Ladies, today I EMPOWER you to focus on the purpose God has for your life. When we do that, it becomes easier to know what is worth pursuing and dealing with and what is not.  If you do not know what your purpose is, I encourage and EMPOWER you to discover it.  First, pray and ask the Lord to reveal your purpose to you.  A book that truly helped me discover my purpose was “Purpose Driven Life” By:  Rick Warren.  You may purchase this book in any bookstore or any website like www.barnesandnoble.com .

Have you ever gone out of your way to be accepted by man? How did you decide that being chosen by God was most important?

  1. I love this post! I definitely can relate to rejection. I was very similar to you in high school except I was short, skinny, w/ small boobies..lol..I still deal w/ rejection (especially w/ men) so I have to ask God to help me w/ that.
