A couple of days ago, I sincerely had a one-on-one with God. The conversation focused on my calling and image. I asked God two very simple questions: “What is my calling?” and “Can you use me so that people can see your light in me?” So the test began…
I have a part-time job as a server at Applebee’s and on Thursday I came to work with my positive attitude as always. I’m usually pretty upbeat and friendly. Sitting at one of the dining tables were three women; I approached the table with a smile but the three women looked at me as if I was nuts. I continued to smile and be polite while taking their orders. Throughout the duration of serving them, they were extremely rude. They snapped at me, giggled as I walked passed, rolled their eyes, and gave me a disrespectful, bad attitude. I continued to smile and let it roll off my back. “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29 ESV)
After about an hour of dealing with the chaos, I presented them their bill. One woman, using extremely foul language, told me that the bill was too much. I sat down and calculated everything by hand and indeed the bill was correct. She then rolled her eyes and began to curse me out, using every name in the book. She was extremely loud and disrespectful. After I didn’t budge, she balked up a mouth full of spit and spit at me, but missed. “Remember the word I said unto you, the servant is not greater than his Lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they have kept my saying they will keep yours also.” (John 15:20 KJV)
I smiled and kindly said, “Ma’am, I’ll go get the manager.” Ooh she was hot! She continued to call me names as I walked away. After all that took place, I still wasn’t upset. I wasn’t angry or revengeful. As I walked by another table, an older woman grabbed my hand. She looked me in my eye and said, “I see the spirit of peace all over you.” Her friend who was sitting next to her shook her head in agreement. She then smiled and said, “Don’t let no devil steal your joy.” “Be we all, with unveiled face be holding as a mirror the glory of The Lord, are being transformed in the same image from glory to glory just as by the spirit of The Lord.” (2 Corinthians 3:18 NKJV)
I got a couple of revelations from this one incident. My first thought was, “WOW, God has really been working on me!” A year ago I would’ve jumped across that table and placed both hands around her neck, but this day I was not moved one bit. My second thought was that God had indeed answered my prayer. I am honored that strangers can see God’s spirit through me.
Thank You for never giving up on me. I thank You for the spirit of peace, love and understanding. I want to pray for those who treat me badly. I pray that You soften their hearts and show them love just as You have shown me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
Ladies, today I EMPOWER you to walk the walk. Be a shining light! Ask God to work through you, so when you step in the room people feel the spirit of God in you!
Share the last time you too had to exude patience, godliness, and temperance in a midst of a trying situation.
