My Best Friend

My Best Friend is like Gold.

She knows me like she’s living in my soul.

She knows how to make me feel.

I question her actions, they sometimes seem unreal.

My Best Friend takes chances too often

Not thinking just reacting, just living the moment without stopping

I love her more than she knows

She is love to me

It’s deeper than any can see; even if they had my eyes it still wouldn’t set them free

My Best Friend…I hurt her

Oh how she cried.

All my apology said was “I tried.”

She couldn’t believe I let her down again, when I was supposedly her one, her only true friend.

I did it again.

I stepped before I thought, I acted before I sought.

Pardon me; I should’ve introduced her from the start.

For those of you who don’t know her

My best friend is my heart.

~Hassanah White

When I wrote the above poem in 2009, I was indeed expressing some emotions.  I often write when I’m feeling something.  I realized the importance of my words and how everything that is me, starts from the center of my chest, which is protected by my ribs, that holds the existence of my life–my precious heart.

How often do read in God’s word how significant our hearts are to Him?  He sees our hearts before He looks at the physical part of us. “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7 NIV) The heart is so sensitive that it requires protecting. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (NLT) The heart needs guarding because it can’t be understood by our own wisdom.  Only God can reveal that to us.

Our hearts endure a lot.  So much that we use the word broken to describe how it feels when we are feeling low.  It feels broken when we end a relationship. It feels broken when a loved one dies.  It feels broken when someone has hurt us.  Our hearts also endure joy.  It over joys our hearts to see a newborn baby, to experience the marriage of two people who love one another or to see our children baptized. This is just to name a few of the emotions that our heart feels.

Love_heart_uidaodjsdsewAs people around the world celebrate love on St. Valentine’s Day today, I encourage each of us to examine the source of our love. Let’s take a deep look into our hearts. Are we harboring resentment because of that ended relationship? Are we being stingy with our love because of past heartbreaks? Are we holding on to extended grief in our hearts because of death? Or is our heart plagued with unforgiveness because of how badly someone hurt us? If we need help deciphering what lies inside, we only need to ask: “Search me, O God and know my heart.” (Psalms 139:23 NLT) And the great thing about God is that not only does He know what lies deep within your heart, He has the power to mend a broken heart! Let’s make a vow on today to recommit our best friend (our heart) to our first love (God)!

Dear Daddy,

We love You with all our hearts, our soul and our strength.  Allow us to continue turning our hearts towards You that You may guide us in the right direction.  When You speak to us, God I pray that our heart hears You and we abide by what You say.  Remind us daily of Luke 6:45 where it states that everything good and evil flows directly from our hearts. Search our hearts, O God! In Jesus Name, Amen!

Ladies, I EMPOWER you to love yourself and respect your heart. Guard your heart so that no evil thing may enter, but also give freely and love with no regrets.  For God is love and He holds your heart in His hands.

Happy Valentine’s Day to each of you!  I heart you!
