If I say, I will forget my complain, I will change my expression, and smile. Job 9:27 NIV
A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. Proverbs 15:13 NIV
A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones. Proverbs 15:30 NIV
With all of these scriptural reminders about keeping a cheerful disposition, one would think that I could easily skip around all the time with a huge smile on my face. Unfortunately, though, that’s not my reality. At least once a day someone has to tell me to smile. Sometimes I’m just lost in my thoughts or my worries. I tend to focus on the negative things of the past and present and it shows up clearly on my face. I prefer not to walk around looking down, depressed and defeated, so I force myself to put a smile on my face. However, the smile is far from genuine because deep down inside there is no peace or contentment.
So, how do I gain an authentic smile? I have to let go of the worries over things I really have no control over anyway. I have to dig deep into God’s word to remind myself of His promises and the millions of reasons that He gave me to smile! A few of my favorite verses are: Psalm 55:22 – “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall”; Peter 5:7 – “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you”; Hebrews 13:5 — “…Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” I remember these promises and comfort and joy fills my heart and I can’t help but to let go of my anxiety, worries, and fears, and put a genuine smile across my face!
Thank You for knowing everything and being everywhere. Thank You for being the ultimate protector and provider and taking on my burdens. Thank You for never leaving me. Thank You for promising to rescue me in my troubled times. For these and so many other reasons You give, I smile. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
