“Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes; will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.” (Proverbs 29:1 NIV) ….
A couple of weeks ago, I got a call from a friend. She began telling me how she was getting attacked in every area of her life and needed prayer. She went on to discuss how her finances were low; she was unemployed; her car broke down; her child was diagnosed with a health condition; and the romantic relationship she was in was ending. She was in despair and depressed.
While she was talking, I was silently asking the Holy Spirit for wisdom to give her and how I should pray. He reminded me that she has repeatedly heard the word and was just putting off her commitment to it. She was living with a man (who was not her husband), having sex with him, not tithing and a list of other things.
I lovingly shared with her God’s word and she denied yielding to it. She said, Well, I know that the lifestyle I’m living isn’t right and contradicts the word, BUT I’ll just live this way now. When I’m older, then I’ll change, and God knows my heart.”
WOWZERS! I came to the conclusion that this friend’s heart was hardened. She had reached a place where her sin was a commonplace to her and she accepted her lifestyle. She didn’t want to be corrected and was not hearing about repentance. She was in the kind of situation Proverbs 29:1 is talking about.
The person who is often rebuked stiffens their neck. She was not the first child of God to have a hardened heart. That’s what happened to the children of Israel in the wilderness. They hardened their hearts to God’s instruction.
Having this situation happen to my friend, I have learned it’s such a dangerous risk when our hearts become hardened. It’s a spiritual emergency. In fact, it’s an emergency in the eyes of God. He will allow the Holy Spirit to deal with a person in their sin with the intent of helping that person to turn to Him; however, when a person’s heart is hardened He can’t work with them even if you are a professing Christian.
As Christians we can’t just put off a commitment to Jesus until later. There is no such thing as a “vacation” when it comes to our walk with Jesus. He doesn’t take one on us. He has promised, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”(Deut. 31:8 NIV).
You’re taking a very dangerous chance when you continue doing what you know isn’t right. First, you can cut your life short because all sin opens the door to the enemy. Secondly, you can’t foretell what kind of consequences will come on your life from the sin. You can resist the Holy Spirit until your heart is hardened. Then, once your heart is hardened, you will be subject to the power of sin.
If you are in sin, don’t think that “later” you can change because it may be “later” than you think. Today could be your last time to turn from your sin and put yourself back in the will of God. Turn to Him TODAY!
We come to You today humbling ourselves before You. We ask that You would send the Spirit into our hearts to search them. We ask that any sin in us be brought to our attention so that we may repent. We ask for Your grace and thank You for Your forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
I EMPOWER you to dial 9-1-1. When the Spirit warns you in your spirit, “What you’re doing is wrong” obey and change. He’s waiting on you!
Could you say a special prayer today for someone you know who has a hardened heart?
