He’s More Than That!

I was talking to one of my girlfriends the other day about finances and how many people who are financially rich and share their tips for teaching purposes follow a lot of Biblical principles. As we continued to talk and “Amen” about how this tip and that tip were influenced by Biblical scripture, my mind felt like it started to race or explode, or maybe it did both. At that moment I realized that many of us (or maybe just me) have gotten it all wrong. Growing up in the church I often heard about how good God is and how Jesus came to give us life, more abundantly and so on. But I didn’t seek abundant living. To be more specific, I took these scriptures and put God in a box, as if this was all He could do:

  1. Isaiah 40:31 (KJV) – “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” If I wait, I will succeed.
  2. Psalm 27:5 (NIV) – “For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.” He will protect me from my enemies.
  3. Matthew 22:39 (NIV) – “‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” He teaches me to love.
  4. Matthew 5:44 (NIV) – “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” He teaches me how to turn the other cheek.

I think you get the point. All of the scriptures above are about survival. They are there to pick me up when I’m down, how to love people on a daily basis, and to protect me when I’ve been abused. I thought to myself, “Lord, I have been keeping you in a box, thinking that this was all you are to us!!!” This is not to toot my own horn, but I can say I have a prayer life, a worship life, I read my Bible, I pay may tithes and offerings (through money, resources, and works), I purposely work on exhibiting Godly character in every situation (not that I succeed, but I try) and I totally MISSED THE ABUNDANCE mindset!!!! This is why I love the Lord so much, there is always something new to learn!

God is not JUST a God who will protect and provide for you. He’s more than that!

god-in-a-boxThat discussion brought a new meaning to the scripture, but “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” Well then what does seek mean? Seek means to search, strive to find. I am striving for knowledge, wisdom and understanding.

I placed God in a box. I only gave Him the big stuff instead of the details that help develop into abundant living. I want shelter, health, love, protection, and provisions. But what about the enjoyments of life? What about the abundance of joy, organization, planning, using my gifts, financial peace, and parenting?

I’m on a study quest, because I want more of God’s direction in my life. Not the “typical stuff” but, the practical stuff. The things I can put into daily use. Will you join me on this journey?

My quest…

  1. Organization and Preparation:

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:9 NIV“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Proverbs 15:22 NIV
Planning and preparation are important. I want to start seeking God for direction and to surround me with resources and the right people for “counsel” regarding my plans.

  1. Time Management:

“The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” Proverbs 21:5 NIV
There seems to never be enough time these days but I have to keep note that “haste makes waste.” My goal is to stay cognizant of my time and use preparation to see profits from my actions and planning.

  1. Financial Planning:

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.” Luke 14:28-30 NIV Budget! I want to continue to work my budget. I have one, but I want to master it.

  1. Building a Business:

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3 NIV God’s knows my desires, but I need to COMMIT the desires of my plans to Him.

  1. Leadership:

“The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction.” Proverbs 16:23 NIV I’m a leader to a small staff. I am seeking God to make my talk and thoughts prudent in nature so that I can effectively lead my team. There’s so many more things that I want to seek God for on this journey of abundant living. But for now, I’ll start here. So are you going to join me? Let’s take God out of the box, and start seeking the abundance He promised us.

Dear Daddy,

Thank You for giving me revelations in Your Word. Thank You for being an all-inclusive God, lacking in nothing and providing us with everything. Lord, it is my prayer that we take You out of the box that we have confined You in and start seeking abundant living for the things in our lives. I praise You for Your wisdom and omniscience. I give You all honor and glory in all that I do. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Ladies, I EMPOWER you to take God out of the box! Join me as I seek God’s plan for abundant living in the tiny and intricate details of my life. He’s more than a healer, protector, provider, and father. He’s also a financial planner, a parenting teacher, an organizational coach, and an entrepreneurial mentor!

  1. I love your post! I know I’m guilty of putting God in a box. I expect him to fix a situation one way & he does it another way. It looks like you have a good plan! I too need to work on my time management, organization/planning, & financial planning.
