#234 Girls

Delete. Start over. Use your influence for good. My EmpowerMoment took a different turn when I realized that what I had in my head was different then the message in my heart.

nigerian-girls2For the past few days, my heart has been occupied by a news story, one that has received very little media attention – until now. On April 16, 234 Nigerian girls were kidnapped from school while sleeping in their dormitories. These young girls, ages 16-18, were stolen not only as a sign of rebellion but to invoke fear and to protest the education of women. You can read more about the story here.

Occasionally, many of us hear about missing children but it’s hard to fathom this happening to anyone we know. It’s certainly difficult to imagine any situation similar to the one I described occurring anywhere close to us. Imagine any city in the United States where 234 women went missing in one night. If that happened, we would expect rage and elite trained forces to come to the rescue. While the EmpowerMoments team does not have the physical capability to rescue over 200 girls, what we do have is a medium to spread the word, ability to pray and a call to action.

EmpowerMoments is a devotional blog committed to the global uplift and empowerment of women. It behooves us to stand in solidarity with our sisters around the globe and we are asking that each of you join the cause. Sometimes the best method of empowerment is giving of your self to support someone else. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Please pray with us and respond to the call to action. Remember that James 5:16 reminds us … The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Dear Daddy,

We come to You today standing in agreement with millions around the globe who are disheartened, sickened, outraged, and disgusted that 234 of your precious children were kidnapped. While we are fully aware of atrocities that occur everyday, God today we are being specific with our petition to You. Heavenly father, we ask that You soften the hearts of the men who stole these innocent sisters, daughters and friends from those they loved. Lord these are Your children and we know that just as You were able to soften the heart of an evil Pharoah You can do the same today. God we call for their release and that they remain unharmed. We ask that You instill courage and conviction in our international leaders, especially the United Nations, so that they will not rest until these girls are found. God go with these families and give them the strength to continue to fight on their children’s behalf. Comfort them and increase their faith so that they do not lose hope in what seems like a tragic situation. I ask that You put a hedge of protection and dispatch an army of angels around each of these little girls. Give them peace in the midst of this storm. God if their be anyone in their presence who can provide assistance to them, give them the courage to help them escape. Lord, You know the end of a thing before the beginning. Help us to keep the faith as we lift these girls to You. We will continue to stand in the gap. Let our thoughts and actions not be in vain. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Ladies, today I EMPOWER you to ACT. Get involved to increase the level of awareness and put pressure on international leaders to take swift action. In addition to prayer you can do the following:

  • Social Media: Post a status/tweet/instagram about the missing girls using the following hashtags – #bringbackourgirls, #234girls, #UnitedNations
  • Sign the petitions and share: Change.org – Click here to sign White House – Click here to sign
  • Stay informed – Stay abreast of what’s going on and spread the word to others

If you have any more information or would like to offer a prayer for these kidnapped girls and their families, please leave it in the comments.

  1. Great post! I had no idea that the situation you mentioned was going on! I’ll definitely spread the word about it!

  2. I signed the petition and have been sharing posts regarding this tragedy on facebook and twitter as well as praying for them. I couldn’t imagine what they are going through. Thanks Chancee’ for taking the time to shed some light on this and urging us to take action for our sisters.
