Empty Prayers

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. (James 1:5-7 NKJV)

Ladies, have you ever prayed and prayed for something and felt like God just did not answer you? Maybe you tried to follow God’s instructions to pray without ceasing, but you feel like God could possibly be tired of hearing the same old prayers from you. You may have been praying day in and day out for a promotion in your career or total healing in your body or even a loved one’s salvation. Of course your forever prayers could be about virtually anything that you are yearning for God to intervene in. However, today let’s focus on those prayers that involve men and relationships. I told you before in My Daddy Blocked It that as much as I tried to make a former relationship stick, it just wouldn’t. I later found out that my father had threatened the young man into not ever calling me again. Basically, no matter what I did or how hard I tried, the relationship was not going to succeed because my daddy had intervened. There are times when no matter how much you beg and plead with God through prayer, you just will not get what you are asking for.

In Mary J. Blige’s song, Empty Prayers, she belts out lyrics of how she has been praying to God to make a man love her to no avail. Regardless of how much she cries out to God, her prayers are “empty” as she refers to them. According to Merriam-Webster, empty means lacking reality, substance, meaning or value. Her prayers were empty because they lacked reality—her reality. She was praying for something that God never intended to come to fruition. Unfortunately for her, it was just not a part of His will for her life.

I was asking, beggin’ for a sign
To bring comfort to this lonely heart of mine
But apparently you’re not what I need
I guess you walking out was Him answering

Ladies, today’s EmpowerMoment lesson is quite simple: Sometimes we pray and pray and pray for that man to love us the way we desire, but it doesn’t happen because it’s just not meant to be. Don’t ever think that God has failed to respond to your prayer. As the header scripture promises in James 1:5, if there is anything that you require enlightenment on, you should ask and “it WILL be given” to you! Often He has responded to us time and time again but because His answer was not what we prayed that it should be, we casually dismiss it. We say foolish things like maybe He didn’t hear us or we begin to question if  the sign is really from God or if it is confusion from the devil. But you must ask by faith and NOT doubt! When you prayed and asked God to turn your serial cheating boyfriend into a faithful man and the cheating did not stop, God answered you. When your abusive relationship was placed before God and the physical, verbal and emotional abuse only got worse, God answered you. When you’ve dated a man for what seems like eternity and you’ve asked God for the past ten years to make him your husband and you’re still just his “girl”, trust that God has already answered you. Now it’s time for you to move on the answer!

After Mary J Blige begged and prayed for a genuine love that she thought she deserved, God answered by not turning her lover’s heart fully towards her. Trust that He has the power to turn that man’s heart any way that He pleases. (Proverbs 21:1)  Even more than that, remember that He ALWAYS hears and answers your prayers. His response is not just always yes. It could be, “No, I have something better for you.”

Dear Daddy,

I am confident that when I pray to You that You not only hear me, but that You also answer me. When I pray to You, help me to not be double-minded when You send me the answer. Help me to accept Your will even when it does not align with my desires. Give me the strength to walk away if your answer is no. Teach me pray according to the plans that You have for my life so that I will not be reciting empty prayers.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Ladies, today I EMPOWER you pray to God, expect His answer and then act according to what He reveals to you. I EMPOWER you to seek Him to lead your prayers so that they are full of your reality based on what He has pre-destined for you and not empty based on what you think you need.

Listen to this powerful song, Empty Prayers by Mary J. Blige as you reflect on the areas where you thought He didn’t answer, but He really did.

  1. Beautiful post! I’m glad that you highlighted on relationships! God knows I’ve probably prayed some crazy prayers in my past relationships when the answer was probably in my face the whole time.
