Today is a national holiday, Labor Day! A day set aside to honor workers or laborers everywhere for their hard work and service. The idea of Labor Day was first proposed by a machinist, Matthew McGuire in 1882, though some argue it was Peter McGuire who first had the idea. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until 1894 when the US declared Labor Day a national holiday. President Grover Cleveland signed it into law. How interesting is it that God had already orchestrated a “labor day” all the way back in Exodus! He clearly states that even He rested!
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. (Exodus 20:11 ESV)
I think we sometimes forget this very poignant scripture in the context that rest is much needed and much deserved. We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that overwhelmingly includes our jobs/careers and many other labors of love such as family, church and hobbies that we continually overexert ourselves. However, God instructed us to work and to REST. How great it is that many countries, including the United States, thought it was something to be celebrated if only for a day.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28 ESV)
Let Labor Day serve as a reminder to you that rest is also in God’s instruction manual called the Bible. Work is important but rest is too. As my aunt likes to say, “Labor Day is a day for me to rest from my labor.” I suppose she’s right, lol.
Thank You for showing me that rest is essential even though I sometimes don’t realize it. Thank You for Your clear instructions, please help me to remember them. Thank You for allowing many countries to spotlight laborers and provide a day of rest. Thank You also for reminding me that we are to not only rest naturally, but also fellowship with You and rest (abide and trust) in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
Laboring sisters, I EMPOWER you to remember to rest! I EMPOWER you to take time for yourself! I EMPOWER you to not get so caught up in all of the many responsibilities of life that you forget to rest. I EMPOWER you to kick your feet up and rest in the Holy Spirit, who gives us grace to work as hard as we do!
Are you allowing yourself to rest from your labor?
Please help us bless and EMPOWER homeless women and their children as the beginning of a new school year nears! For more information on how you can donate and help make a difference, please click here http://www.gofundme.com/cfeux8.
