“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them…” Romans 12:6 ESV
Knowing this day would soon be upon me, I pondered day in and day out on what I would share. This morning I sat at my laptop staring at a blank document praying that something would miraculously appear. I placed my fingers on the home row of the keyboard with the hopes that my fingers would just start harmoniously moving about and typing something worth you reading. However, all I could hear was my grade school typing teaching saying, “a-s-d-f-j-k-l-;”. I was beyond the word frustrated. I really couldn’t understand why what once came so easy to me was proving to be harder than those differential equation problems I hated so much in college.
The more I stared at the blank page, the more I realized just how long it had been since I sat down to do this. I was rusty. My creative writing ideas just weren’t flowing the way that they had in the past when I wrote regularly. For that moment in time, I thought to myself, “What if you just don’t have it anymore?” I have always been so great at writing, but maybe since I wasn’t utilizing it, the craft was gone. Maybe writing wasn’t like riding a bike where it’s simple to just pick it back up at anytime. Maybe, just maybe this gift that I have long taken for granted just didn’t belong to me anymore…
As I continued to stare at the blank page on my computer screen, discouraged by what seemed like a curse, I remembered these words: “For God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.” I knew those words; I’d heard them a few dozen times before. I had even used them to encourage others. The only person who could take my gift of writing away was the One who gifted me in the first place and according to Romans 11:29 that will never be the case.
Each of us has been gifted with some amazing talent. It may not the type of talent that you showcase before a packed amphitheatre, but you have something that God has given you to impact the world. Maybe you are an encourager and can help people move past their fear and realize their dreams. Maybe you have crazy faith and can believe God for miracles that others think are completely impossible. Or you may be able to sing in way that the heavens open up! If you have not been operating in your gift, it is not gone; it is simply lying dormant and it is your job to wake it up! Your gift, God and the world are waiting for you to pick it back up.
Think about it like this: Someone gives you an amazing present for your birthday that you absolutely love. You open it up and realize that using the gift makes life easier for you and your family. However, after 3 days, you rewrap the gift and stuff it under your bed. What good is the gift to you then? How do you think the giver would feel knowing that it’s not being used? How are the people around you missing out because you have selfishly tucked your gift away? It is time to unwrap your gifts! Someone is waiting on you to be great. Someone was waiting on this EmpowerMoment to get unstuck , so I had to dig out my little box, dust it off and use it!
Before I wrote this piece, I found a few different translations of Romans 11:29. I pray that these verses of scripture move you to the understanding that He has not withdrawn His gifts and that He is waiting for you to use them!
For God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. (New International Version)
For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn. (New Living Translation)
For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. (English Standard Version)
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. (King James Version)
Thank You for giving me such amazing gifts to bless You and others with. Please forgive me for not utilizing them the way that You intended me to. I am grateful that You are no Indian giver. What you have placed in me is mine for life. Please help me to use the gift in the greatest way! In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
Today I EMPOWER you to use your gifts! Even though there are no “use or lose” policies in the Kingdom, there are still people waiting on you to activate your gifts. Encourage, believe, sing, dance, create, produce, enlighten, EMPOWER…just give your gift!
