Music to clean. Music to study. Music to work. Music to cook. Music to worship. Music to dance. Music, music, music. I need music! I turn on music to do everything. It makes me happy. It gives me inspiration. It helps me accomplish what seems impossible. So imagine my dismay when I was at the gym, jogging on the treadmill, and all of sudden my ear buds went silent. My phone died and I was only 15 minutes into my workout. I immediately panicked! How on earth was I going to complete an hour of jogging without tunes and lyrics? As ridiculous as it seems, the music means so much to me that I stopped the treadmill and started gathering my things to go home. I just couldn’t continue on without the ideal conditions.
As I was shutting down my exercise session, I really started thinking. Is this how you react when the conditions are not ideal? Do you quit because the circumstances are not what you are used to? Does everything have to be perfect for you to persevere?
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12 NIV)
I am writing you today simply to encourage you to stick with it even if the conditions are not what you are used to. No, you cannot quit your job because of a conniving co-worker. No, you cannot give up on your dream because no one else believes in it. No, you cannot walk away from your relationship because he just doesn’t understand you. No, you just can’t give up because everything is not all peachy and creamy. You have to hop back on that treadmill and work it all the way out!
The scripture states that we are blessed if we persevere under trial. However, the greatest blessing comes in the latter part of the text, “after having stood the test.” If we keep pressing through trials and less than perfect situations, our crown of life is on the way! Surely we can endure a little hellish conditions for the promises of heaven!
After thinking about how absurd I was being for abandoning my workout for some music, I got back on the treadmill and did the remaining time with no music…I think I see my belly getting a little flatter and tighter already! That crown is on its way!
Please forgive me for the times that I gave up simply because the conditions were not ideal. Help me to persevere through the less than ideal circumstances so that I can receive my crown of glory. Please remind me that everything does not have to be perfect as long as I continue to serve You, a perfect God. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
Today I EMPOWER you to keep going even though the circumstances are not ideal. I EMPOWER you to persevere for your crown.
